Yellow-crowned Night Heron

A timid and secretive bird that can be easy to miss in the mangrove fringes.  A thick bill lends itself well to breaking apart hard shelled crustaceans.  Juvenile plumage is brown and white with adults getting a beautiful blue-gray coat with black head, white bar under the eye and a thin yellow crest down the head that gives it its name.  These guys are excellent hunters and have been seen eating a variety of crustaceans in a variety of sizes.
